3 Things to Consider Before Accepting a Job Offer

Getting a job offer might be the happiest moment in a job seeker’s life, for finally all the struggle is paid off. While it is tempting to just say ‘Yes’ and sign the deal, there are some factors job seekers need to consider before finalising the recruitment process. After all, the final decision of a job search should not only depend on how you feel about the interview, but also how you feel about the company’s culture.

It is important to make a decision that most closely suits your personal and career goals. Choosing a job that aligns with your needs and preference will fulfil your self-satisfaction and boost happiness, which then results in a higher-satisfactory result. On the contrary, suffering from a job you actually dislike is rarely worth it.

That said, it is vital that you start your professional career out on the right foot. If you have hesitation or questions when dealing with a job offer, here are things to do and consider before saying yes to the offer.

  • Do not say yes immediately but advise the company that you are pursuing a number of opportunities. Ask for time to consider, 24 hours minimum, and give a specific date that you will return your decision, 3-5 days maximum. This will give you enough time to follow up on any other situations of interest. If the company demands an immediate response you may want to consider if this is the right employer for you.

  • Develop a list of criteria for your ideal job. This can include responsibilities, culture, location and travel, salary and benefits, preferred industries and companies. Next, evaluate how the job offered to you matches these criteria. Also, is the salary in line with industry standards? DO YOUR RESEARCH.

  • Do not accept an offer until you fully understand what you are accepting. Be clear on your daily responsibilities and who will be the manager or supervisor. This includes job title, pay and benefits, who you will be reporting to, advancement opportunities and start date. If there are terms you would like to change, now is the time to negotiate them.

Agreeing to the offer

If you feel the job suits your goals, it is time to agree on the terms and conditions of the job. Remember that an offer is not an offer until you receive it in writing. You should request the employer to send you an offer letter (email is acceptable) which provides you with the offer details.

Agreeing to an offer will also give employer permission to do drug testing and other possible conditions of employment. Your signature on that document is what gives the employer the right to do pre-employment checks such as drug testing, credit checks and reference checks. So be ready to live up to the terms that you have already agreed to.

Job offer ethic

If you must turn down an offer because the job seems unsuited to you or you get a better offer somewhere else, there are some ethics you should practice. Receiving a job offer is a compliment, therefore, if you decline an offer, you should be courteous and thank the employer for the opportunity. You never know what life will bring you in the future, so it is best not to burn the bridges with the company you’re rejecting.
