Dos and Don'ts at Work during Ramadan: For Muslims and Non-Muslims

The holy month of Ramadan is upon us once again. For Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a month of spiritual reflections. As one of the sacred pillars of Islam, it entails several religious practice such as fasting from sunrise to sunset and other acts of worship such as prayer, and charity. If you are a practicing Muslim, you are most likely to spend Ramadan while working at the office during daytime. This naturally will change what your working day-to-day look like for at least the next month.

Even if you are not a Muslim, the month of Ramadan will demand some adjustments to your daily workflow. In Southeast Asia for example, some companies may reduce their working hours on account of Ramadan. You can use this time to practice consideration towards others and their culture. By supporting coworkers who are fasting, you can contribute to fostering an inclusive and productive workplace for everyone during the holy month.

Here are the do’s and don’ts for working during Ramadan:

Do These Things at Work During Ramadan

Wish each other well everyday

One of the spirits of Ramadan is the sense of togetherness, which is not limited to Muslims since we share the same ground and sky. This Ramadan, try wishing your friends and colleagues best wishes on a regular basis. If you want to embody the full holy month spirit, you can say “Ramadan Kareem” to your Muslims coworkers.

Talk less, do more

The one thing that will make fasting while working easier is to minimize the time you spend talking and focus more on your tasks. People who are fasting see a drop in energy levels, this is why many people prefer to work from home during Ramadan because it can save energy from commuting. But for Muslims, if you must work from the office, do have a balanced meal to sustain the body and schedule your sleep to stay fit. You can also get some mask freshener stickers to get rid of bad breath.

Plan and execute CSR event if possible

During Ramadan, all Muslims around the world are encouraged to do good as much as they can. They believe for every good thing, the deeds will be multiplied during the holy month. As such, it won’t hurt anyone to plan a CSR event during Ramadan. After all, it is always virtuous to give back to society while enriching our charity spirit.

Avoid Doing These at Work During Ramadan

Don’t lose temper while working

The goal of Ramadan is to practice restraint in whatever situation. This includes restraining yourself from hunger, thirst and most importantly negative emotions like anger. That is why it should be everyone’s top priority to not get angry while working during Ramadan. Sometimes debates are inevitable during meetings or discussions, but make sure you don’t lose yourself while doing it.

Don’t refuse iftar when invited

Iftar or break fasting during Ramadan is one of the most cherished activities to do. Muslims usually invite their friends and family to have iftar together at their places or another as an act of kindness. When invited, it is better not to refuse since the invitation speaks about their appreciation and willingness to spend time with you, even when you are a non-Muslim.

Working during Ramadan can be hard sometimes. However, all the hardships make it all even worth it since hopefully you will gain self-control and patience by the end of the month. Good luck and Ramadan Kareem for all of you!
