When applying for a job, understanding whether to submit a CV or a resume is crucial. These documents serve as the initial point of contact between candidates and employers, becoming the first determining factor in deciding candidates’ suitability for the role.

While the terms CV and resume are often used interchangeably, they represent different formats tailored to distinct professional contexts. Understanding the difference between both is crucial to increase the chance of success in landing a job, as the job posting will often specify which one to submit.

What is a CV?

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a comprehensive document detailing an individual’s background, including education, work experiences, achievements, and skills in chronological order. Typically, a CV spans multiple pages, depending on the depth of experiences and professional history.

In addition to basic personal information, CVs often include details that are not commonly found in resumes, such as academic achievements, honors and awards, professional affiliations, licenses or certifications, research projects, or publications.

What is a Resume?

A resume, on the other hand, is a concise summary of an individual’s work experience, skills, and accomplishments, tailored specifically to a job application. Resumes are typically one or two pages long and focus only on the qualifications most relevant to the position.

Due to its directness and clarity, a resume is usually preferred when applying for corporate jobs such as management or finance roles. It’s often accompanied by a cover letter to elaborate more on the highlighted skills and interest in the role.

CV vs. Resume: Key Differences

Several key aspects make a CV and resume different. Here are the details.

Length

With the difference in content elaboration, it’s natural that the length of both documents is different. Depending on the experience, a CV can have more pages than a resume. For instance, a 5 to 8 page-long CV can be found from a professional with 10 years of experience.

In comparison, a resume shouldn’t be too long. A resume is more concise, thus it’s often only 1 to 2 pages long. In most cases, many recruiters prefer a single-paged resume for convenience purposes.

Purpose

Generally, a CV is written to give an overview of an individual’s background information. In the US, this kind of document is needed to apply for a position in academia, such as a researcher, fellowship, or teaching position.

On the other hand, a resume is more suitable for applying for positions in business and industry, government, or entry-level roles. It’s written to highlight experience and skills tailored to the targeted position.

Geographic location

Different countries have different ways to call personal information documents to apply for work. According to TopCV, companies in the UK and most European countries use the term CV even for shorter documents. Meanwhile, companies in the US, Australia, Germany, and Asian countries usually refer to it as a resume.

Contents

The difference also extended to its content. For instance, in EU countries, data such as nationality, civil status, maiden name, and often marital status are usually included in the personal information section. On the other hand, the UK, US, and Australia only require general location, mobile number, email address, and LinkedIn profile.

Conclusion

Understanding the distinctions between a CV and a resume is essential because these documents differ in length, purpose, and regional conventions. So it is crucial to use the appropriate format for each application. By tailoring documents to specific roles and maintaining clarity, job seekers can significantly improve their chances of success. Creating a strong CV or resume is not just a technical requirement, but a vital step toward securing the desired job position.
