What You Need to Know about Management Trainee Program
by Emma • Mon, 14 Mar 2022 12:43PM
Management trainee, also known as MT, is one of the popular leadership programs many corporations have to offer. Many individuals choose MT as a career after graduating from school due to its interesting benefits. Here is what you need to know about this program.
What is management trainee
Management trainee is a program designed to prepare quality employees with solid orientation and understanding about the company's profile and business operations. Organizations typically provide this training with a purpose that new hires would possess characteristics that will put them in a more strategic position at the company's management level. During the MT program, trainees will participate in a variety of activities to measure their strengths, interest, and expertise. They will be given training on all of the company's operational procedures, business controls, planning skills, risk management, and managerial planning. Some companies assign trainees to work in different divisions throughout the program to see which one suits them best. Additionally, they will receive on-the-job training or direct work practices with everyday corporate operations in addition to the material. The length of the training is determined by the regulations of each company, starting from 6 months to two years.
The benefits for talents
1 . Sharpening Leadership Skill
Trainees in the programs are trained to possess all necessary skills and competence to become on the managerial level. Becoming a good leader should start with having the ability to be led as a team player. MT trainees will get used to working with employees at all levels and after some time, they are given challenges to lead a small project. This makes MT a brilliant way to sharpen leadership skills for graduates.

2 . Requires No Prior Work Experience
Management trainee program is typically aimed for fresh graduates with little to no prior working experience. In fact, some companies usually make it mandatory that applicants should have not more than two years of working experience. However, many companies have rather strict age requirements, such as applicants should not be older than 27 years old.
3 . Learning a Lot While Getting Paid
Management trainee is not necessarily similar to an internship program, because MT is more of a contract-based employment. One great thing about MT is that while trainees are recruited to be part of a company during the program, they will get a chance to learn as much as possible while carrying out actual job duties. Additionally, they get paid a fair amount of salary, so this will benefit trainees a lot, since they do not need to pay to learn valuable skills, but rather get paid for it.
The benefits for employers
As MT programs recruit fresh graduates with a certain age limit, companies will get to have young top talents on board. While this means that companies get inexperienced candidates who need extensive training, it will be easier for companies to align and ‘mold’ these trainees with the existing organizational culture. MT also ensures the availability of qualified people resources who can eventually advance to upper levels of management.
How to land a job as a management trainee
If you are a fresh graduate who is interested in joining a management trainee program, you need to get yourself ready. This includes preparing yourself with both soft skills and hard skills that will help you land a position as a trainee in your dream company. Management trainee programs do not really take your work experience into account, if not at all. However, there will be a series of selection processes to test your competence and potential. The recruitment stages often include a written aptitude test, psychological test, focus group discussion, presentation, and one-on-one interview. Here are some insights:
Practice Critical Thinking Skills
To make sure you perform well during the recruitment process, you need to sharpen your critical thinking skills. Either written or oral test, the questions are usually open-ended and your answers are expected to be explanatory instead of a simple “yes” or “no”. Companies look for individuals with great problem solving skills, so you need to start changing your habit into becoming a critical thinker in all aspects of your daily life. Challenge yourself to question “why” and “how” in day to day matters and latest world issues, so you will get used to critical thinking.
Practice Presentation Skill
Having what it takes to be a notable management trainee candidate is not enough; you need to make employers see it. This is why presentation skill is vital if you want to ace the selection process. Be it during a group discussion, individual presentation, or interviews, showing that you know how to present yourself is non negotiable. As the selection process is limited in time, one way employers can assess your communication skill is when you present something or when answering some questions.
So, are you interested in applying for a management trainee program? Whether you are a student in your last year of university or a fresh graduate with little to no work experience, an MT program may suit you well. There are many bonafide companies that actively open this program all year long, so it is your homework to always look for information and stay updated. Good luck!
