Planning a Fresh Start for a New Career

The “New Year, New Me” might be the most common resolution everyone says each year. With the looming threat of pandemic remains,  many people still look forward to better days to come, be it in their personal life or professional career. Some are planning to step on the corporate ladder, to start a new journey in a new workplace, or even to change career direction and start afresh.

What about you? What’s your plan for 2021? Maybe you have decided to quit your current job and pursue a remote working arrangement for more flexibility. Or, maybe you want to seek a work environment that allows more career growth. Either you decided to change career or start anew, here are some tips on making that switch:

Step back and do honest review about your current situation

Are you feeling disgruntled in your current job? Would you feel happier if you worked for a different manager? Ask as many questions to yourself what true career calls are and this will help discover your interest. For example, if you still find your career choice one that fulfills your life purpose, you might want to seek a different work environment within the same industry. But if you find your current career choice irritating, it might be better for you to get a whole new different career. The ability to perform work that is aligned with your mission and values will encourage your best self to step higher.

Do career planning

Be introspective about yourself. What are your strengths and skills? What have you accomplished so far? What did you enjoy most and excel? Take a look at all the things you have done during your career and while at school. There are many self-assessment instruments you can use to help understand your career aptitude, styles of leadership and conflict management, and workplace preferences. Once you understand these instruments, you will understand yourself and can decide which next career move you should pursue.

Hold informational interviews

Professionals are happy to share their experience and help others who are interested in learning from them. When communicating with them, make it clear that you are not asking for a job. Instead, state that you admire them and want to learn more about their experience and their field of expertise. You might find ideas for invigorating work in your current field that you can implement immediately.

Due your due diligence

Research your current career path as well as other options. Read trade journals, conduct research online, and interview others in the field. Reach out to others in your network to better understand other industries and fields you are interested in exploring.

Keep improving yourself and enjoy the journey!

While you do your homework on discovering a new job interest, make sure to also keep your skills updated. You cannot change your age, but you can change your attitude and add lots to your knowledge.
